Gurgaon traffic police in ‘better position’ to handle Diwali rush

With Diwali not even a week away, Gurgaon traffic police is undertaking several measures to combat congestion in markets and other busy areas.

Traffic personnel have been deployed in key congested areas such as the DLF phases, Mehrauli-Gurgaon Road, Golf Course Road, Sadar Bazar, Masjid Road and areas around Leisure Valley. Their duty hours have been increased as well.

The police has been instructed to heavily fine traffic violators.

“An order by the police commissioner, directing all SHOs and heads of police posts to be on the ground during Diwali for assisting traffic police, will be issued soon. The additional force will ensure that our preparations for Diwali are in place,” confirmed DCP (traffic) Simardeep Singh.

Singh explained that “extra force” from Gurgaon police will be deployed in areas not covered by the traffic police.

Traffic police officials acknowledged that although the staff is well-equipped to tackle the pressure, it gets difficult to manage heavy volume of traffic, especially due to reduced road width in many places owing to construction and encroachment.

Traffic police personnel also said they are in a “better position” to manage the rush this time, as opposed to last year when Diwali coincided with Haryana Swarna Jayanti celebrations.

Like it was done during Dussehra, traffic police officials said that they will have men dressed up in mythological characters to control traffic, and also spread awareness on the need to follow  road norms during festivities.
