Every family spends an average of Rs 5,000 on the purchase of crackers during Diwali. Maybe this year they can use the money for something better.
The Supreme Court ban on sale of firecrackers in the NCR during Diwali season has given people twin reasons to cheer. While almost everyone acknowledges that the ban will keep pollution levels relatively under control, many people are busy calculating the money they will save by not buying firecrackers.
Incidentally, every family spends an average of Rs 5,000 on the purchase of crackers during Diwali. “I spend Rs 4,000 to Rs 5,000 on crackers alone for my children. However, this time, I shall use the money to buy them good gifts,” said Saurabh Singh, a resident of Paras Tierea, a society in Sector 137, Noida.
Annu Sharma, a resident of Sector 23, Noida, said that bursting crackers during Diwali was indeed the high point for her children. “My 12-year-old son loves to fly rockets. However, when we explained the Supreme Court ban and how it will aid in controlling pollution, he was convinced about saying no to crackers,” she revealed.
Speaking to City Spidey, Sangeeta Singh, a resident of Sector 39 and mother to a 5-year-old, said that she endorsed the ban. “Last year I could not take my son out during Diwali, owing to the atrocious pollution levels. Enjoying the lights and meeting friends should be the high point for children during Diwali. This year we shall buy some good toys for him to make up for the crackers he can't buy,” she added.
