Gurgaon: Date for city mayor elections to be announced today

After concluding its elections for ward councillors, the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) is all set to conduct elections for the posts of mayor, senior deputy mayor and deputy mayor.

The election will be held in accordance with a notification issued by the Urban Local Bodies on October 3. As per the prescribed rules, the election will take place within 30 days of the issue of the notification. The actual date is expected to be announced today, according to D Suresh, divisional commissioner, Gurgaon.

After commanding a majority in the MCG councillor elections, BJP leaders will now play an imperative role in deciding the leaders for the posts. It is to be noted that this time the post of mayor is reserved for a woman from the scheduled castes.

Candidates likely to be considered are Sheetal Bagri, BJP councillor from Ward 10, and Madhu Azad, BJP councillor from Ward 7. For the senior deputy mayor, Sunita Yadav, a BJP candidate and now councillor for Ward 33, is a strong contender.

With the stage set for the elections, the new councillors are ready to take charge and start work on the development of the city in general and their wards in particular.
