The members of Riverside Sports and Recreation Club in Mayur Vihar Extension elected a new managing committee yesterday. It was a neck-to-neck battle, but, in the end, the team that had been in power for the past 12 years won again.

CM Jain, a resident of Vardhman Apartments, was elected the new president, defeating presidential candidate Vijay S Satokar, a resident of Samachar Apartments, by a margin of 18 votes. Of the 342 votes cast, Jain bagged 178 and Satokar 160.

The club has about 900 members — of which 600 are promoting members and the rest are associate members. As per the rules, only promoting members have the right to cast their votes to elect the managing committee every two years.

The election was conducted peacefully by a team led by HC Joshi, a resident of River View Apartments, and also the presiding officer for the polls.

In all, there were 31 candidates for the 15 posts, including that of the president.

The opposition team, led by Satokar, managed to win four seats in the managing committee. They are Alka Gulati, C Sivdasan, Hariom Garg  and Sobhna Jain.

Anand Sharma and Sunil Kumar Agarwal were elected as vice-presidents. Parikshit Sawhney was elected the general secretary and Sanjay Gupta the treasurer. The other members of the committee include Anurag Chopra, Arun Mahajan, Dinesh Sahai, KKR Das and Saroj Dhulia.

Talking to City Spidey, the newly elected president said, “We are thankful to the all members for supporting our team. They have shown faith in us — and we intend to keep it.”

On the allegations of fund embezzlement levelled by the opposition team, he said, “The results are a clear and resounding answer to their false charges. I have nothing more to say about this.”
