A group of residents from different societies met the mayor of SDMC (South Delhi Municipal Corporation), Kamaljeet Sehrawat, at her office in Sector 19, Dwarka. The agenda of the meeting was to apprise her of the sanitary condition in the sectors. They also offered cooperation from the general community to improve the system and ensure effective work.

Negligence un sectors such as 1, 2 and 7 was also discussed.

President of Air Force Naval Apartments, SK Sharma, said at the meeting, “We have come here to ask you to focus on three sectors in particular - sectors 1, 2 and 7 - as these are always ignored by the corporation. We want SDMC to take sanitation issues seriously. And we, the residents, are with you in accomplishing this.”

The subject of distribution of dustbins to societies in Sector 7 was raised by a social worker and resident of Sri Agrasen Apartments, AK Parashar. He asked the mayor to ensure the distribution of dustbins to all 27 societies in the sector as soon as possible. Parashar also asked the mayor to involve retired people such as him in the work to encourage public participation.

A resident of Shruti Apartments, Anurag Bahl, raised the issue of encroachment in the area in front of Vardhman Mall and asked the mayor to take action on this.

Residents in the meeting also raised other issues such as sanitation roblems due to weekly markets and the beautification of triangular spaces across sectors at the end of service roads. They also suggested that the mayor task the RWAs and managements of the societies with maintenance of these spaces.

Replying to the queries, Sehrawat assured the residents that proper action would be taken. She said the distribution of dustbins in all societies would start by next week. She also instructed the area’s sanitation workers to get in touch with the RWAs and managements of societies to ensure proper cleaning and maintenance of the areas. To encourage waste segregation and composting, she assured the people a subsidy of up to Rs 1.5 lakh for every composter bought at the society level. She also emphasised that the corporation was doing its best and positive results would be achieved in due time.
