Ghaziabad: Let there be light

The city is already struggling with ten-hour-long power cuts — and it's not even peak summer yet.

Ghaziabad: Let there be light

It didn't take peak summers to challenge Ghaziabad's power supply. The city has already begun struggling with frequent and long power cuts over the past few days.

Residents of at least 30 colonies, including Vijay Nagar, Pratap Vihar, Bharat Nagar, Sudama Puri, Arya Nagar, Lohia Nagar, Govind Puram, Sanjay Nagar and Kavi Nagar, are exasperated with the ten-hour-long power cuts every day. If this is the condition in April, what happens in the coming months when the demand is way more? Even inverters with double batteries have failed to provide relief, with power cuts extending almost half a day. Residents want the district administration to speak to the state government for additional power supply.

Chief engineer of the electricity department, Arvind Rajvedi, told City Spidey that during summers, the demand for power is at an all-time high. He says that at present, the city's demand varies from 1,200 to 1,400 megawatt, whereas the supply is only 800 megawatt. This shortage in supply is the reason behind the long power cuts. He added that he had gotten in touch with the zonal headquarters in Meerut and the main headquarters in Lucknow to try and bridge the gap between demand and supply.
