St Xavier's Gurgaon had a surprise for grandparents today

We have all heard of schools celebrating Teachers' Day and Children's Day, but Grandparents' Day? St Xavier's High School, in Sector 49, Gurgaon, did just that - it dedicated a day to grandparents and encouraged students to come out and express their love for them through skits and dance performances.

"They teach us, guide us and help us in everything we do," these lines recited by a child in kindergarten reiterates the place grandparents have in kids' lives.

Talking to City Spidey, a teacher from the school, said, "In this fast-paced life, where more often than not both parents are pursuing careers, grandparents step in to fulfil a major role in raising children. Therefore, this beautiful bond of love and affection needs to be celebrated. The kindergarten children have displayed immense talent today through a number of dance performances and drama recitals."

The function started with a display of chair yoga, a technique the elderly find beneficial. This was followed by a street play Mann Ki Baat Apno Ke Saath and dance numbers on Bollywood songs of the yesteryears.

The show concluded with a funny street play that had everyone in splits.

Speaking on the occasion, Nicholas Gomes, principal of the school, said, "It was heartening to see children putting in so much effort with the sole intention of regaling their grandparents. Through today's performances so many grandparents were entertained and reminded how special they are in the life of these kids."

Meenu Verma, a grandparent, said, "We came down all the way from Pune to be part of this show. It was such a fun-filled morning after so long."
