The Gurgaon traffic police observed a zero-tolerance day on Saturday to check traffic violations and imposed and collected spot fines, amounting to over Rs 25 lakh.

With the local Gurgaon police assisting them, the traffic police caught the offenders, anyone who violated traffic rules – whether driving a two-wheeler without a helmet, crossing the traffic signals, not wearing a seat belt when driving a car and the like – and till 8 p.m. issued 24,842 challans.

According to the police, a sum of Rs 26,19,800 was collected as fines and penalties from the offenders.

The zero-tolerance drive started at 10 a.m. and lasted till 8 in the night. Vehicle owners who did not possess valid vehicle documents or proper licenses too were roped in. Previously they used to be let off after a warning, but during the drive none were spared. People speaking on phones when driving or those without proper pollution certificates too had to cough up the fines.

On a normal day, the number of vehicles challenged in Gurgaon averaged 3500, but during the drive, the number vehicle owners fined was recorded at 24,842.

“We had deployed teams now on the NH-8 since most of the rules are broken on the stretch and frequent accidents take place there. Our goal is to reduce fatalities on the road,” said Ravinder Kumar, Public Relations Officer, Gurgaon police.

Under particular gaze of the police were the drunk and driving cases. Along with a focus on drunk and driving cases, drivers crossing the speed limits were also taken to task, in a bid to bring greater discipline on the city roads.
