Addressing a health camp that was organised today for private security guards under a Delhi government scheme, Amulya Patnaik, commissioner of Delhi Police, said that security guards of residential societies were an indispensable arm of community policing.

Patnaik explained how private security guards in many foreign countries were trained so they could support neighbourhood policing initiatives. “There is a need to train security guards in our country too. Under this scheme, called Prahari, we will undertake periodic training programmes, counselling and health camps for private guards to make them confident and more effective,” Patnaik added. He also emphasised the role of the RWAs in strengthening the private security force.

From November 1, Dwarka has been accorded the status of an independent district in the context of policing. Patnaik, therefore, took the opportunity to congratulate the people and the first DCP of Dwarka district, Shibesh Singh.

Hundreds of guards from various residential societies, representatives of RWAs, social organisations and resident bodies were present at the health camp. Some among them were appointed as the ambassadors of this scheme. Security guards who had displayed their mettle in preventing crimes were honoured through certificates and a jacket. All guards were given a free health check-up.

According to DCP Singh, the guards have been given the phone numbers of the police personnel in charge of their respective areas. “The guards are also being counselled by experts and retired army personnel. We will also train the guards to handle security weapons. They will be trained to defend themselves,” Singh said.
