X-Mas to bring Magenta cheer for Noida commuters to South Delhi

There is good news for commuters who travel between Noida and South Delhi. A section of the much-awaited Magenta line of the Delhi Metro, connecting Botanical Garden to Kalkaji Mandir, is going to open to the public from December 25. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to inaugurate this line.

According to sources, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath is also expected to attend the inauguration ceremony.

The 12.64-km stretch is part of the 38.23-km west corridor that falls under the Metro’s Phase III expansion plans.

With the Magenta line, people will save at least 45 minutes travelling between Noida and South Delhi.

Brightly lit and with videos informing commuters of the routes, the Magenta line promises both comfort and convenience to commuters. The trains will have WiFi and USB ports, along with charging points, LED and LCD screens and back rests near the wheelchair area. The seats in the new trains will be red, pink, orange and blue to give the coaches a lively feel.

December 25 has been a significant date for the Delhi Metro, as its first line — the Red line — connecting Dilshad Garden and Rithala, had been inaugurated on the same day in 2002. The line was flagged off by former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. The inauguration of the Magenta line is likely to augment the vote bank prospects of the BJP government in the Lok Sabha elections in 2019.

For now, the new line will include nine Metro stations — Botanical Garden, Okhla Bird Sanctuary, Kalindi Kunj, Jasola Vihar-Shaheen Bagh, Okhla Vihar, Jamia Milia Islamia, Sukhdev Vihar, Okhla NSIC and Kalkaji Mandir.

The Botanical Garden station will be the first interchange station outside Delhi, and since both Botanical Garden and Kalkaji Mandir are interchange stations, there will be a significant reduction in travel time between the Blue and Violet lines.

Once the entire corridor opens, commuters from Noida will be able to go to Gurgaon by changing trains at Hauz Khas. The commute time from Noida and Faridabad will also get shorter. Passengers between Noida and Faridabad can change trains at Kalkaji Mandir.

According to sources, after the inauguration, PM Modi will visit Sector 62, where he will address the public in an open ground.
