Gurgaon steps up fire safety in its restaurants and pubs after Mumbai incident

After the recent fire incident in a Mumbai restaurant, which ended up killing 14 people, the Gurgaon fire department has pulled up its socks and is now checking in on the fire safety arrangements in pubs, bars and restaurants across the city. The fire officials have formed four teams of three or four people each and are visiting various establishments in the city to check whether the fire safety arrangements are in place.

Cyber Hub was one of the first to be checked, which included an inspection of its exit points, exit routes, fixed fire units and signages in case of a fire.

Speaking to City Spidey, Lalit Verma, assistant fire officer, said, "In the fixed fire units we are checking for the proper functioning of alarms, smoke detectors and sprinklers."

The team even carried out elaborate inspections of the kitchens of every establishment in Cyber Hub.

IS Kashyap, fire officer, Gurgaon, said, "What happened in Mumbai can mainly be blamed on temporary fire structures. People don’t realise that a place serving alcohol should not have synthetic curtains."

Talking about Gurgaon, he said, "We will check the rest of the destinations tomorrow and be strict in the enforcement of rules."

The teams will also check the seating capacity of the places they go to for inspection.
