Which group will win the East End Apartments elections this Sunday?

East End Apartments, in Mayur Vihar Phase I Extension, is all set to hold fresh elections this Sunday, January 7. The fight will be between the present managing committee, headed by BK Singh, and the opposition, which earlier held the posts, headed by KG Verma.

Both Singh and Verma are retired officials of the central government and hence claim years of experience in administrative work in different departments.

The members in the present managing committee believe they have successfully addressed the society’s issues and carried out development work in the past three years, while the opposition allege it has been a failure and that their work previously at the helm of society affairs had been better.

In their election manifestos, both the teams have come up with 19 issues to convince residents to vote for them. Interestingly, both have a few common issues they wish to address, such as the installation of lifts in the shorter, C Block buildings, CCTV cameras in each block, better security detail in the society, installation of solar panels and repairing of damaged roads inside the society.

However, the present managing committee claims to have done a good job of development work such as upgradation of year-old lifts in multistorey buildings, repairing of basement columns in many blocks, whitewashing of high-rise towers and changing of water pipelines in C Block buildings.

Singh said, “When we took over three years back, parking was a major issue for residents. We introduced a systematic parking policy, and today there are dedicated parking slots for vehicles in each block.”

Singh also pointed out that they had strengthened the weakening basement pillars in many towers and even checked dripping water along the external walls of several blocks, which would have damaged the buildings as well and aggravated the problem.

“Another major issue during our tenure was age-old lifts that had become a danger for residents in high-rise buildings. The upgradation of one lift each in blocks 1 to 9 has been completed or is in the process, and the rest will be done soon. We have also proposed the installation of lifts in the Block C buildings,” Singh said.

“Yes, if there is one thing I regret not doing in the past three years is whitewashing the C block buildings. They really need some repair work,” he added.

The opposition, on the other hand, is confident that they will convince residents of the C blocks for the installation of lifts. “Those on the third or fourth floors face a lot of issues, especially older residents. Therefore, lifts are mandatory in these blocks as well,” said Verma, presidential candidate from the opposition.

However, members of both groups agree this will be a challenging task, as owners of ground-floor flats are not ready to pay for the lifts.

It is also pertinent to mention here that both the present managing committee and the opposition, which previously helmed society affairs, have had allegations of fund mismanagement.

Speaking on this issue, Singh said, “We have to understand that these fights and allegations are not going to get us anywhere.”

Verma, on his part, said, “We do not take the present managing committee as opponents, because ultimately we are from the same society and will be working for the betterment of East End Apartments. We have our own vision, they have theirs; rest is up to the residents.”
