Delhi government will give subsidies to housing societies that take up rooftop solar energy projects. Delhi power minister said solar energy would bring down power bills.

Delhi Power Minister Satyendra Kumar Jain on Sunday launched a solar project at Sector 21 Taj Vivanta In the presence of hundreds RWAs and managements of the societies across Dwarka.

Area MLA Gulab Singh Yadav ,CEO of BSES and other dignitaries were present on the occasion.

The Power Minister said solar power would help people reduce their electricity bills.

The production of electricity from Bhakhra Nangal Dam is only 22 paise and through coal is Rs Six per kilowatt. So, in that way the cost of electricity per unit must be minimum, he said adding in Dwarka the idea was to go solar to the maximum extent possible.

Dwarka had been chosen for a complete solar system to the societies using the rooftop area. According to him the initiative would maximise the utilisation of solar roof top potential in South and West Delhi. In the first phase around 150 societies will be targeted in Dwarka.

Depending on the response, the program will be expanded to other residential segments across BSES. 

The initiative by the Government of Delhi is in partnership with USAID –PACE D and Indo German Collaboration (GIZ).

On the occasion, a solar portal was also unveiled as part of the initiative to facilitate online, paperless transactions for roof top solar applications.Talking on the solar scheme and benefit Power Minister said that  monetary savings for consumers, capital subsidy from MNRE, Rs 2 / Unit Generation Incentive  from Delhi Government will be there for the societies who opt for solar system to generate electricity.

Commenting on the initiative, BRPL CEO  Amal Sinha said, “BSES is fully committed to promote renewables.  The aim of our solar city initiative is to accelerate solar rooftop development by aggregating consumers and bringing in the necessary participation from solar rooftop developers.”

As informed by BSES, six societies in Dwarka have already signed up for the pilot project. A survey has also been done for the societies like Rajasthan CGHS Sector 4, Shiv Lok CGHS and Katyayani CGHS in Sector 6, IIT Engineers Apartments, Gandhi Ashram CGHS and President CGHS from Sector 10 have been chosen after the survey done by United States Agency for International Development (USAID) for BSES.

On the occasion, RWAs were made aware about the benefits and the also given chance to ask their queries to BSES officials. Most of the questions were asked by the RWAs were related to savings of money and energy and also the coast in adopting the system
