In a rather disheartening incident, a two-week-old puppy fell into an unused borewell in Shipra Riviera society in Indirapuram today. But in a rare display of kindness, residents have rallied together, along with animal welfare activists and officials of the Ghaziabad fire department, to rescue the puppy.

According to Uddit Ranjan, a resident of the society who takes care of the pups, it is part of a litter of five born to a bitch that lives on the society premises. “The unused borewell is located in the central park of the society. The pup accidentally fell into the borewell around 4 pm while playing with kids near it,” Ranjan said.

Since then, a number of residents, fire department officials and animal welfare activists have been trying to rescue the pup. “We have tried using a rat trap, a spatula covered in quick glue, even a rope to get it out, but all our attempts have failed so far,” Ranjan added.

Speaking to City Spidey, Somdath Sonkar, fire station officer of the Vaishali fire station, said it was especially difficult as the pipe was only 6 inches in diameter but more than 30 ft deep.

A JCB has now been sent to the spot after Ritu Maheshwari, vice-chairperson of GDA, was contacted. However, officials said that digging a hole in the society compound mat affect the structure of the buildings.

Meanwhile, Ranjan said the incident has left Crystal, the mother of the pup, traumatised, which has been howling ever since the pup fell into the borewell. “We have shifted the other pups and the mother to a safe place for now,” Ranjan furthers said.
