'Gurgaon on Saturday': A car rally with a vision

This is going to be a car rally with a difference — visually impaired people will act as navigators for drivers, and the deaf and mute will be the traffic marshals.

Gurgaon On Saturday, as the rally is called, will be flagged off this Saturday at 11 am from Manger village police post on the Faridabad-Gurgaon road leading towards the government deaf and mute school behind 32 Milestone.

All navigators taking part in the rally will use Braille to check the routes from a route chart that will be given to them before the flag-off. The traffic marshals will monitor the entire route to check whether or not the participants are following rules.

The rally is being organised by Gurgaon-based NGO Uthaan in collaboration with a Noida-based manufacturer of semiconductors. More than 50 people have registered for the rally, which has attracted the attention of residents from across the NCR.

“The rally is an off-roader, and we are using the village area of Manger to organise it. The routes are challenging and the drive will be fun. About 20 participants are joining from Noida and the rest are from Gurgaon,” president of Uthaan, Sanjay Kaushik, confirmed.

Shalini Bishnoi, one of the organisers based in Noida, added, “The idea is to provide an opportunity to the visually impaired, as they do not get a chance to enjoy exciting events like we do.”
