The act of fitting crash guards and bull bars is in contravention of Section 52 of the Motor Vehicles Act of 1988 and attracts penalty under Section 190 and 191 of the Act.
The District Transport Department of Gautam Budh Nagar will take strict action against vehicles who have unauthorised crash guards or bull bars as these fittings jeopardise the safety of pedestrians. According to the Motor Vehicles Act of 1988 if you are caught driving a car with these accessories you shall be fined a sum of Rs 1,000. However, if you are caught again (repeating the same offence) a fine of Rs 2,000 shall be levied. A person who trades in these accessories could be fined upto Rs 5,000.
Bull bars and crash-guards are fitted in front of the vehicles to prevent damage from collisions. The Act specifically prohibits people from altering their motor vehicle in a manner whereby particulars contained in the certificate of registration are at variance with those originally specified by the manufacturer. Arunendra Pandey, the ARTO of Gautam Budh Nagar informed City Spidey that the guidelines on this subject were sent to them by the UP Government on January 13. “Notices have also been issued to dealers of these accessories,” he added.
According to Pandey, if a vehicle with these fittings encounters a massive collision then the impact is bound to be disproportionately distributed. Consequently the airbags may not open to save the occupants. “By next week the transport department will start a drive to identify the cars that have these crash guards and bull bars. We shall also get cracking on the vendors,” Pandey stated.
Dhiraj Kumar, a resident of Divine Meadows in Sector 108 said that many government vehicles too are equipped with crash guards and bull bars. “The cops should fine the politicians and government officers too,” Kumar observed.
