A group of five assailants helped a prisoner escape on Monday morning by throwing chilli power into the eyes of police personnel. The incident took place at the gate of Maulana Azad Medical College in Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg, with the Delhi Police headquarters just 4 km away in ITO.

According to the police, the prisoner, Sandeep Dhillon, who was being kept at the Mandawali jail in East Delhi, was being taken for a dental check-up to the medical college when the incident happened.

“As the police van reached the hospital gate and the prisoner was headed towards the hospital with three police personnel escorting him, the assailants, standing nearby, threw chilli power into the eyes of the police and absconded with Sandeep. One of the cops immediately opened fire, but they fled,” said a police officer in IP Estate police station.

Nearby areas, including Mandi House, Pragati Maidan and Connaught Place, are under tight security.

“All police stations along the border areas have been alerted and a search operation is on,” the police said.
