The alleged suicide of a 50-year-old woman in GH7 society in Crossings Republik, Ghaziabad, is a mystery. The woman, before killing herself, left a note on a wall of the flat that read: "This house is haunted…Madhur Jain of Heydey Communications, Rohini, Delhi has killed us."

According to the police, Karuna Siddhanti, the victim, killed herself on Tuesday afternoon by hanging herself from a ceiling fan after poisoning her pet dog.

Madhusudan and Karuna Siddhanti, an elderly couple, lived in Flat No 10102 in the Crossings Republik society, along with their pet dog, Bruno. The couple had bought the house in 2010 but due to financial constraints, had to sell it to an army colonel and shift to Delhi in 2012. In 2013, the new owner of the house gave them the offer to return to their old flat as tenants — and the couple agreed.

According to sources, Heydey Communications, as mentioned in the suicide note, is a marketing and advertising agency in Delhi.

The matter came to light when Madhusudhan Siddhanti (60) approached the Crossings police post with information about the death of his wife the next day. According to Madhusudhan, the incident took place on Tuesday while he was sleeping in an adjoining room of the flat. Around 5.30 pm, after he woke up from a nap, he found his wife’s body hanging from the ceiling fan. The pet dog Bruno was also lying dead nearby. The situation was so depressing that he contemplated suicide himself. He said he loitered around the Crossings Republik golf course with the intention of leaping in front of a moving train, but then changed his mind and approached the police.

The police have taken the bodies of the deceased into custody.

The couple, who hailed from Bellary in Karnataka, did not have children and were living in the NCR for several years now. Bruno, the black Labrador, had been their companion for over 12 years.

Prajyant Tyagi, in charge of the Crossings police post, told City Spidey that prima facie the incident looked like a case of suicide, which was instigated by severe financial strain.

Tyagi further said that on questioning, the husband revealed that the family was in heavy debt. “Madhusudhan revealed that he was a consultant and had dealings with the Delhi-based Heydey Communications. He also said that he owed money to the company. Around seven months back, he had issued a cheque of Rs 12 lakh to the company. The cheque bounced and after that, Heydey Communications filed a case against him in a Rohini court,” added Tyagi. “He was served a court notice about a fortnight back. Ever since, the couple has been in depression, fearing a jail sentence.”

However, the police are yet to ascertain why Karuna had written that the flat was haunted. Until now, they have not established any contact with Madhur Jain from Heydey Communications, or the army colonel who is now the owner of the flat.

Police have stated that the bodies have been sent for post mortem and that reports are awaited. “The husband has been taken for questioning and will also undergo a medical check-up to ascertain if he is mentally sound,” an official said.
