A resident of Sector 19, Sanjna started her journey four years back after she joined Dwarka-based social organisation Choti Si Khushi.
To celebrate Women’s Day, City Spidey visits the park at Sector 3, where Choti Si Khushi carries out its literacy mission, to have a chat with her.
Surrounded by women, Sanjna looks immersed in teaching. Not looking up, she begins to speak about herself, “I like teaching these women, spending time with them. I want them to feel confident. This time, I have a batch of about 50 women. I’m really happy that my effort, no matter how small, is improving the literacy count of the nation.”
Every day, she spends about two hours at the park.
Sanjna was earlier a teacher of Geography. She quit her teaching career, as her army husband had to continually move base. Both her children are now established, and she felt the strong need to do something for others. She says, “My kids would often say that I could be an inspiration for others. They said, ‘I must do something — something different. I then decided to put my teaching skills to use.”
Feeling empathy for her adult students, she says, “I feel their hardships. A woman suffers from many handicaps due to rigid social customs and religious practices. But I think, if educated, they will not let themselves be exploited easily. That’s what I am trying to do. All educated women should come forward to educate those deprived of this basic right. Our small ripples will bring about a wave some day.”
