Dwarka Expressway will be constructed in five phases… But when?

On Monday, union minister, Rao Inderjit Singh stated that the Dwarka Expressway will be constructed in five phases. Singh was addressing members of DXP Welfare Association (an association of homebuyers who have invested in residential properties alongside the expressway) who are urging the government to complete the construction of the expressway.

In the first phase, a 5.3 km stretch will be constructed from Shiv Murti, which is located adjacent to the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway to the railway under-bridge in Dwarka.

In the second phase, a 4.2 km stretch will be constructed from the railway under-bridge to the Delhi Haryana border. A 10.2 km stretch will be constructed from the Delhi Haryana border to the railway over-bridge in Basai in the third phase while a 7.9 km stretch will be constructed from the Basai railway over-bridge to the Kherki Daula toll plaza in the fourth phase. Finally a 4 km stretch connecting Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport to the Dwarka Expressway will be constructed in the fifth phase.

The minister however, did not disclose the dates when construction would commence for each of the five phases. On Friday, Rao Inderjit Singh had stated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is soon going to lay the foundation stone for the Dwarka Expressway.

The association members urged Inderjit to resolve all the issues of the expressway stretch as two lakh homebuyers are impacted. Singh assured that the issues, particularly those on the Gurgaon stretch will be resolved soon. “The last notification for acquiring land for the expressway has already been issued and the NHAI (National Highways Authority of India) will soon start the process of acquisition and construct the five phases,” he added.

Inderjit stated that he is in constant consultation with the Prime Minister and union urban development, road transport and highways minister, Nitin Gadkari for this project.

The Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA) had announced the Dwarka Expressway project in 2007. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) had taken over the project from HUDA in October 2016. Ever since, they have been embroiled a in litigation suit concerning some land in New Palam Vihar that has stalled the construction of the expressway. Till the land transfer happens, NHAI’s tender for constructing a 10km elevated road between the Delhi border and the Basai railway over bridge is on hold.
