GDA razes illegal banquet hall in Vaishali after court lifts stay

The enforcement department of the Ghaziabad Development Authority (GDA) today razed the Red Carpet banquet hall, which was running illegally near Link Road in Vaishali. The action was initiated after the Ghaziabad Civil Court lifted a stay on the action by GDA. The banquet hall, one of the largest in the area, was running on a plot of land owned by the Mohan Nagar Sahkari Awas Samiti, a committee of Ghaziabad residents.

Members of the committee said that they had agreed to let the banquet hall operate on the land for a few years, but later asked them to vacate the land, following notices from GDA. “After the notice, the owners of Red Carpet got a stay from the court and continued operations despite objections. We need the land to construct flats for members of the samiti,” said Mahendra Kumar Rai, a member of Mohan Nagar Sahkari Awas Samiti.

The action was delayed because the civil court stayed GDA’s notice in the case.

The matter was also raised by Alok Kumar, president of FedAOA, Ghaziabad. “An RTI filed by me revealed that there were several such banquet halls conducting business illegally on green belts in and around Indirapuram. This is not only is illegal but also removes green cover. It's good that the authorities are finally taking action on this,” Kumar said.
