A vacant waste-disposal site at Sector 23 has become a major cause for concern for residents of sectors 21, 22 and 23, and adjoining areas. Despite a major fire at the site on February 21, Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) has not taken any steps to ameliorate the situation.

The vacant site that was turned into a waste-disposal plot three or four years back belongs to HUDA, and MCG uses it to dump city waste.

Bhawani Shankar Tripathy, a resident of Sector 23, said, “Despite a fire that broke out, no action has been taken. Both MCG and HUDA had promised they would take appropriate action against people responsible for unauthorised dumping and ensure disposal of accumulated waste. But nothing has moved so far!”

“This is a HUDA land earmarked for a hospital, but the department has failed to secure the site by building a boundary wall or any kind of fencing. We had earlier requested HUDA to hand over land to RWAs of the area to develop it as a park,” said Bhim Singh, another resident of Sector 22.

MCG commissioner Yashpal Yadav said, “I will send my men there to submit a report, and I will take action against those responsible.”

The fire on February 21 created a major furore, and passers-by clicked pictures, shot videos and posted several tweets on this. The fire had lasted for about six or seven hours.
