For the past two years, City Spidey has been reporting on the callous an utterly irresponsible way the civic bodies are handling the indiscriminate burning of horticultural waste. Dry leaves and garbage are set on fire in broad daylight, and SDMC and DDA just play disinterested bystanders.

Just that in this case, the actual bystanders are not disinterested any more. Residents across Dwarka are sending in images and videos of this irresponsible practice, that not only endangers the societies near which it happens but also adds to the crippling air pollution these days.

Caught between complete civic apathy and indignant shock, the residents themselves had to call in fire tenders to tackle the situations.

In the past one week alone, about 10 such incidents in vacant plots, roadsides and dumping spots have been noticed by residents, who have then taken to social media and WhatsApp groups to raise awareness of the issue.

Here are two instances captured by Dwarka residents:

On Saturday, dry leaves, grass and garbage were set on fire in a vacant plot adjacent to Brahma Apartments, Sector 7. The fire was extinguished by the fire brigade.

Munish Kundra, a resident of Brahma Apartments, Sector 7, said, “Civic bodies should prosecute those responsible. Also, the throwing of garbage and horticulture waste in vacant lands must be stopped.”

Garbage at dhalaos and dumping spots, too, are being burnt in an organised way. Most of the times, residents say, it’s the local vendors or people from civic bodies themselves that are getting their hands dirty.

A resident of Sri Agrasen Apartments, Sector 7, AK Parashar, has been carrying out an independent survey of the area. He squarely blames the municipal corporation for the burnings.
