In a first-of-its-kind initiative in India, Gurgaon, Faridabad and Karnal have been selected for a Liveability Index survey to assess cities on 15 core parameters, including governance, social infrastructure, education, employment, health and safety and security.
The survey, to be conducted under the aegis of the Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry, will assess the liveability standards of 117 cities on a score of 100. It will conclude on April 14 and the results will be announced in May.
The index will also take into account physical infrastructure such as housing, open spaces, land use, energy and water availability, solid-waste management and pollution.
A Mumbai-based agency will conduct the survey.
Welcoming the move, residents said Liveability Index would reveal the quality of physical and social infrastructure in the city.
“This is welcome step, as issues which concern the residents will be identified and also compared on set parameters with other cities. It should help in taking corrective measures,” said Latika Thukral, a city-based activist.
After Gurgaon’s failure to get tagged as a Smart City under the Smart Cities Mission, Haryana chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar and union minister for housing and urban affairs Hardeep Singh Puri had stated that all central technical assistance would be given to the city while finances would be borne by the state government.
The Smart Cities Mission was launched in a bid to develop citizen-friendly and sustainable cities. A Smart City is allotted Rs 100 crore annually over a period of five years by the union government.
