The Delhi government has proposed a law to award death penalty to minors' rapists apart from making stalking a non-bailable offence.

The Delhi Assembly passed a resolution on Tuesday seeking amendments to existing laws to make stalking a non-bailable offence and to award the death penalty to those convicted of raping minors.

The resolution, moved by AAP MLA Saurabh Bharadwaj, demanded that the Delhi government present a Bill asking the Centre to amend the law.

Delhi Home Minister, Satyender Jain told the House that the government would present the Bill seeking amendments.

“The Delhi government will table the Bill. It would be sent to the Centre once it is passed by the Delhi Assembly.” Jain said.

The minster also added that, the Delhi government hoped the Centre would not object to it. “The law should be amended to make stalking a non-bailable offence and rape of minors punishable with the death penalty.” the resolution stated.

The Delhi government led by AAP’s Arvind Kejriwal and the central government has been at loggerheads since both resumed office.

Thus, it remains to be seen whether or not the proposal mooted by Delhi assembly will see light at the end of the tunnel.
