Dwarka: Service lanes turn into busy thoroughfares; residents suffer

Residents of several societies in Sectors 7 and 9 of Dwarka are facing every day chaos as they step out of their homes, as commercial vehicles — tempos, mini-buses, Gramin Sewa vehicles — have started using the service lanes and internal roads.

In fact, Gramin Sewa drivers have even made a temporary stand on the service lane near Harsukh Apartments in Sector 7.

Though there have been no fatal accidents yet, collisions are common, say residents.

AK Parashar, a resident of Sri Agrasen Apartments, said, “About a month back, a commercial vehicle caused an accident in front of Plot No. 10. The biker escaped with injuries. Service lanes near main roads are now being used by commercial vehicle to avoid heavy traffic in peak hours – this is a serious threat to the lives of pedestrians. Defunct streetlights add to the problems. There are number of electrical poles in middle of the service lanes! We have called the attention of the traffic police and the authorities, but there has been no action.”

The vehicles using the service lanes in Sector 7 approach the service lane of Sector 9 and also the internal roads of the sector to get to Sector 9 Metro Station and and also to Gurgaon. This practice helps drivers to avoid traffic signals.

President of Federation of RWAs of Sector 9, KS Bhati, and President of Ganpati Apartments in Sector 9, spoke to City Spidey. He said,“we have raised the issue during police-public meetings several times, and also with the DDA, but they are not serious. Once a lady was hit by a school bus — and there are several more instances. Cabs who are using the service lanes are also taking the internal roads near neighbourhood parks. This can be dangerous. I appeal to police through City Spidey to take up the matter and resolve it as soon as possible,” he added.
