Ghaziabad: Crossings Republik's liquor shops asked to relocate Residents protest against liquor shops

Protests from residents of Crossings Republik seem to be having the desired effect as the excise department of Ghaziabad has directed owners of two liqour stores to relocate their shops. Residents of Mahagun Mascot society along with residents of other societies of the Ghaziabad township had staged a protest in front of these shops on Tuesday.

The shops were opened in Mahagun Mart near Crossings glass gate recently. A beer shop and a liqour shop came up in the mart on 1st and 2nd April respectively, said residents.

Residents are concerned that the shops would invite anti-social elements who would resort to open drinking apart from creating ruckus in the area.

Excise inspector RK Singh, told City Spidey that although the liquour shops were not violating UP excise rules, they have been asked to relocate on grounds of social well-being.

“A meeting was held with residents and license holders in this regard. The shop owners have been asked to relocate their shops as early as possible keeping in mind public convenience. The owners assured us that they are already looking for new shops and would relocate as early as possible,” Singh said.

“Meanwhile, both the shops have been asked to keep one of their shutters down and to ensure that the customers pick up their items and leave immediately. They have also been asked to employ a security guard who would keep vigil and ensure welfare of the residents visiting the market,” Singh further added.

On the other hand, the protesting residents said that they would not step down until both the shops are relocated. “We are well accustomed to eyewashes now. We will maintain our daily protests till the shops are shifted. Moreover, residents from various societies also plan to approach the district magistrate’s office once again on Saturday,” said Vikas Kamboj, a resident of Magagun Mascot.
