Five children from Gurgaon — Chinmay, Utkarsh, Soumya, Lavnya and Gauri — will compete in the national figure skating championship at the ice skating rink of Ambience Mall on April 28-29.

A total of 11 children have been selected from Haryana. Team Gurgaon had won the state ice skating championship in January with 12 gold medals.

“Gurgaon skaters performed well during the trials and state championship, after which five of them were selected for the national championship. The team won gold medal in the state championship and we hope Haryana will bag the gold in the nationals as well,” Navdeep Singh, general secretary, Gurgaon Ice Skating Association, said.

Singh said the children have been practising regularly at the iSkate in Ambience mall after the January selections.

More than 200 skaters from 13 districts of Haryana had participated in different categories during the January event, which saw 90 competitors from 10 districts, including Gurgaon, Sonipat, Palwal, Hisar, Karnal, Panchkula, Faridabad, Bhiwani and Jind. Ten per cent of the participants hailed from economically weaker sections.

Over 100 ice skaters took part in the 14th National Ice Skating Championship held in October last year at iSkate of Ambience Mall.
