In a case of alleged suicide, a 15-year-old girl lost her life after leaping off the balcony of a 12th floor flat of Gaur Homes society in Govindpuram area of Ghaziabad on Sunday night.

According to police, Shalini Dagar, a ninth standard student lived in flat 1258 of tower F with her mother Manisha Dagar, sister Shalu Dagar and younger brother Kartik Dagar. Shalini’s father Rakesh Dagar had passed away around three years ago.

The family was living in the society as tenants and the flat which they had occupied belonged to Rakesh Dagar’s brother.

According to the police, the incident took place at around 1.40 am in the morning. The incident first came to the notice of a security guard posted at gate number 2 of the society. The guard heard a loud thud and ran to the spot. He later alerted the police and other residents of the society.

Shalini fell towards the society’s commercial area outside the compound near gate number two and hit a railing before her body landed on the ramp of the basement parking area. Police said that the body hit the railing so hard that it severed the left arm which landed few feet away from the railing while the rest of the body landed on the ramp of the basement parking area around 12 feet below.

“None of the family members were aware that the girl had fallen. They realised this only when we approached the flat with a query. According to Shalini’s mother, the girl went to bed at around 12.00 am in the night along with others. The mother also said that the girl might have been under the spell of black magic,” said Srinivas Gautam, in charge of the Govindpuram police post.

Gautam further said that it is suspected that the girl might have attempted suicide earlier by slashing her wrists as there were multiple scars on her forearm.

According to Mohit Dagar, Shalini’s cousin, the girl was suffering from depression and was undergoing treatment since the last one year.

“We have received a complaint from the family members and the body has been sent for post mortem,” Gautam said.

Ghaziabad has seen a sudden spike in cases of people falling from balconies of high rises. There have been multiple cases of accidental deaths and alleged suicides after falling from high rises in Indirapuram, Raj Nagar Extension and Crossings Republik. Some of these cases involved children as young as 4 years old.
