Illegal auto stand at U-turn below Subhash Chowk flyover sparks traffic chaos

An illegal auto-rickshaw stand has been made at the U-turn located below Subhash Chowk flyover on Sohna road in Gurgaon and it is causing a lot of problems for commuters. It is greatly affecting the traffic movement from Bakhtawar Chowk towards HUDA City Center, Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway and Sector 50.

Despite the illegal auto-rickshaw stand is located not too far away from the Sadar Police Station, the situation has yet not improved.

In fact, the traffic police officials have closed a U-turn opposite Sector 47 by placing jersey barriers last month and it has also increased the traffic on the stretch where the illegal auto-rickshaw stand was located.

The commuters are claiming that the unavailability of free passage at the U-turn has forced them to take the Subhash Chowk flyover and take the next U-turn after descending.

“Apart from being congested, the U-turn is also dangerous for driving as auto-rickshaws drive against the flow of traffic and minor accidents have become common at the spot. Hence, I drive over the flyover or take the multiple turns of the Sohna road for reaching my destinations,” said, Arvind Soni, a resident of sector 47.

Another commuter said that once he was stuck on this way for 25 minutes and since then he has stopped taking this route.

“Since the time, I was stuck under the flyover for 25 minutes as auto-rickshaws had virtually blocked passage, to reach Bakhtawar Chowk, I take the service lane of residential areas until I reach a point near the junction where I can make a turn,” Kishan Singh, a resident of Uniworld Gardens said.

Leaders of the auto-rickshaw union said that as civic agencies have not designated parking spots, they are forced to make temporary stands at the roadside and vacant places.

“Despite several assurances from authorities regarding dedicated parking stands for auto-rickshaws in the city, things are yet to materialize. Hence, auto-drivers have no option but to station vehicles on the side of the roads or vacant places for getting passengers,” said Yogesh Kumar, state general secretary of Haryana Auto Chalak Sangathan.

Meanwhile, traffic police officials have assured that they will depute officials at the disputed place and put an end to the congestion crisis.

“Concerned officials have been alerted about the situation and necessary actions have been initiated to end the congestion crisis and removing the illegal auto-rickshaw stand below the Subhash Chowk flyover,” ACP (traffic) Sandeep Mallik said.
