Ghaziabad: New Ganga water treatment plant to tackle city's water scarcity Water

The eight lakh residents of Ghaziabad are all set to receive Ganga water as UP Jal Nigam is set to construct a state-of-the-art water treatment plant in the city. The proposed plant will have the capacity to hold one hundred cusecs of water and this project will cost eight hundred and twenty crore rupees.

The plant will receive water from Gangnahar and the UP irrigation department will be paid a royalty of three hundred and forty two crore rupees regarding this purpose. This royalty will be shared by Ghaziabad development authority, Municipal Corporation of Ghaziabad, Avas Vikas Parishad, Uttar Pradesh State Industrial Development Corporation (UPSIDC) and the irrigation department. The UP government will bear the remaining cost of the project, i.e. four hundred and seventy-eight crore rupees.

Work will begin on the project from August and it will be completed within two years.

Ghaziabad is a rapidly expanding city and its residents require more water with each passing day. Many colonies within the city are already being supplied Ganga water.

However, a lot of areas in the city constituting multi-storied apartments don’t receive Ganga water and instead have to rely on groundwater. Rajnagar Extension, Mohan Nagar and many other areas of the city continuously face scarcity of water.

Some months ago, the Jal Nigam had sent a detailed project report of the above mentioned Ganga water plant. The government has approved the project and the Jal Nigam has already begun the necessary paperwork.
The Jal Nigam has sent a letter to the municipal corporation of Ghaziabad, while demanding four thousand square meters of land to store water. Further, a search is ongoing for 4 acres of land to set up the water treatment plant.

The plant will supply Ganga water to nearly a dozen colonies of Mohannagar area including Rajendra Nagar, Shyam Park, Lajpat Nagar, Shalimar Garden Main and Shalimar Garden among others. Moreover, other colonies set to receive the Ganga water are Raj Nagar Extension and Bapudham colony.

C.P. Singh, Municipal commissioner of Ghaziabad, said that the Municipal Corporation of Ghaziabad had already approved thirty crore rupees regarding the project. He said that the other departments too will soon release their share of the funds.
