Ghaziabad is all set to kick off its two-day Kachra Mahotsav (Garbage Festival) starting Sunday. According to Ritu Maheshwari, district magistrate of Ghaziabad, the event is a joint effort of the residents, the district administration, the municipal corporation and the Ghaziabad Development Authority (GDA) to spread awareness on waste management.
The event is a creative way of looking for ways to manage 1,200 tonnes of garbage that the city generates every month. The festival would include activities like marathons, art competitions, demonstrations by active residents who have been exploring ways for managing garbage, and artists who have devised unique ways to recycle and reuse garbage.
The festival, which starts tomorrow morning, will continue till the evening of Monday.
Such a fest was first organised in Raipur in Chattisgarh, followed by more such events in Lucknow and Varanasi earlier this year.
The DM further revealed that the administration is in the process of starting waste-to-compost and waste-to-energy plants in Modinagar and Galand, respectively. While bids have been opened for the Galand plant, a detailed project report (DPR) for the Modinagar plant has been prepared with a budget of Rs 7 crore.
“The plant in Galand will be spread over 10 acres and will treat garbage from municipal areas like Khoda colony and Indirapuram. The Modinagar waste-to- compost plant will treat around 150 metric tonnes of garbage from Loni, Muradnagar, and Modinagar every month. The Hapur Pilkhuwa plant will treat around 200 metric tonnes of garbage every month,” she added.
Also, plans are afoot to use solid waste along with bitumen to pave village roads under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana scheme, she said.
Similarly, there are plans to set up waste management apparatus in upcoming high rises in accordance to the Model Building Bye Laws of 2016.
