The Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal on Monday emphasised that good ophthalmic care is the demand of the present times. He was addressing a gathering at the inaugural function of an eye hospital at Sector-9 in Dwarka.

The LG said that eye care is a must for everyone and should be an important subject for a patient. He also shared that people are more serious about their eyes in the present times and they are using search engines and other tools to get cues about ophthalmic care.

Baijal also praised the setting up of dedicated eye hospitals and said that many such hospitals are needed. He also discussed the importance of patient and doctor relationships.

During the inauguration of eye hospital, Minister of State (Independent charge) of Housing and Urban Affairs and Chief Secretary of Delhi, Anshu Prakash, were also present.

Padamshri awardee and Chairman and Managing Director, Centre for Sight Group of Eye Hospitals, Dr Mahipal Singh Sachdev, said, “Dearth of ophthalmologists in the country is the cause behind worsening of treatable eye problems to blindness.”

“With only one ophthalmologist available for 90,000 people, more than 15 million blind population and over 200 million people with eye-related problems are in a dire need of trained paramedics and ophthalmic assistance,” said Sachdev.

“We, at Centre For Sight Eye Institute in Dwarka, are committed to addressing this problem. We aim at making trained ophthalmic assistants, technicians, optometrists and eye care specialists available to people in times to come,” added Sachdev.
