To prevent random dumping of construction and demolition (C&D) waste at undesignated sites across the city, the MCG has directed all carriers transporting such waste to get themselves registered with the civic body by May 31, as directed by the National Green Tribunal (NGT).
The owners would need to display this registration number on the carriers, along with the MCG logo painted in purple.
If they fail to do so they will be penalised and carriers of repeat offenders will be seized.
The MCG fined 21 violators in April itself. The practise is rampant despite the presence of a dedicated site for dumping C&D waste next to the Basai waste treatment plant.
MCG chief Yashpal Yadav said, “It has been brought to my notice that construction and demolition waste is being dumped along roads, in green areas and in ditches. To ensure effective management of such waste in areas under the MCG’s jurisdiction, new directives have been given.”
He added, “Carriers will be confiscated if they are found to be violating the order and the owner or operator will be fined Rs 5,000 the first time — this amount will increase by 20 per cent each time thereafter. And if that doesn’t help, the waste carrier will be eventually seized and released only after it is registered with the MCG.”
The city generates 700 tonnes of C&D waste daily, and the figure increases by 10 percent annually.
The principal creator of C&D waste will now have to hire a registered carrier for its disposal, otherwise the waste-creator will be fined Rs 5,000, in keeping with NGT guidelines.
According to the directive, the owner of the C&D waste carrier will have to pay Rs 205 per tonne to the MCG for segregated C&D waste, and Rs 565 per tonne for unsegregated C&D waste for the processing of the waste at the Basai plant.TAGS: C&D waste / Waste / MCG / Basai plant / NGT / Construction and Demolition (C&D) / Dumping
