Paschimanchal Vidyut Vitran Nigam Ltd (PVVNL) has imposed an electricity duty fine of Rs 10.12 crore on Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) for providing unauthorised 515 KVA (kilovolt-ampere) power supply to eleven shops operating at Botanical Garden metro station.

Further, the discom has also lodged an FIR against the general manager of DMRC and three other people regarding power theft at Sector 39, Noida police station.

According to an official of PVVNL, 10,000 KVA power was supplied to DMRC for metro’s operations in Noida.

“In 2009 the DMRC had taken power supply from us and later gave a tender to a private firm RQ Power Industries Private Limited to provide electricity to the shops in the complex at a higher tariff. Till date they have not paid a single penny for the electricity duty to the PVVNL,” said Anil Kumar, Superintendent engineer of PVVNL.

However, officials of the RQ Power Industries Private Limited stated that they have been paying the amount collected in the form of electricity tariffs to the DMRC.

“After DMRC’s assessment was conducted, it was found that the amount at which PVVNL provides electricity is much lower than what DMRC is charging from the shops. This is a serious offence. Hence, an electricity duty penalty assessment amounting to Rs 10.12 crore was imposed on DMRC,” said Kumar.

PVVNL has been constantly sending notices to DMRC to clear the pending amount. However, the DMRC didn’t respond to the messages.

“Following the complaint given by PVVNL, we have registered an FIR under Section 135(1) ( Theft of Energy) of Electricity Act, 2003 against Vivek Agarwal (GM Of electricity department in DMRC), Sandeep ( a station supervisor), Sujeet (Gm of RQ company) and Mahipal ( a local supervisor). We are investigating the case,” said a senior police officer.

The PVVNL has asked DMRC to clear the dues in the next fifteen days in it’s most recent notice. If DMRC is unable to do so, power supply of the shops operating at Botanical Garden metro station will be disconnected.
