In keeping with the National Green Tribunal’s mandate, SDMC sealed several borewells in Dwarka. The drive was carried out at various metro stations, including sectors 21,8,9,10,11,12,13 and 14. These borewells had been dug up by the Delhi Metro without DJB’s permission.

According to sources, 348 such illegal borewells have been dug up by DMRC across Delhi — all fated to be sealed.

A list of over 1,000 illegal borewells has been prepared by the DJB — of which, about 200 have already been sealed in public schools, residential pockets, commercial areas.

Speaking on the drive, a DJB official, requesting anonymity, said, “Even public schools are have illegal borewells. Schools like Bal Bharti in Sector 12; Mount Carmel in Sector 22; DAV in Sector 6; JM International in Sector 6; Adarsh Public School in Sector 12; Vishwa Bharti Public School in Sector 6 and others have illegal borewells, but they have now been sealed. The illegal borewell at DTC Depot at Sector 8, at Sector 22 Mall and at Sector 19 have been sealed too.”

Dwarka-based water conservationist Diwan Singh, commenting on the initiative, said, “It’s really sad to know that even government organisations and educational institutions are doing the wrong thing! It’s quite shocking really — if government bodies can do so with impunity why not others! I think the DJB and the SDM office are doing a great job this time.”
