Gurgaon: To ensure uninterrupted power supply, Smart Grid project work starts

To ensure uninterrupted power supply in Gurgaon, the work on Smart Grid project started on Sunday in Palam Vihar. The initial works included duct construction which is aimed at moving overhead electricity wires underground.

The ambitious project was in the reckoning for over two years. It aims to eliminate all the power woes of people in a phased manner.

The Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam (DHBVN) has given the responsibility of developing the Smart Grid to two companies - Tata Projects Limited and Vindhya Telelink Limited.

Tata Project Limited will look after the project works in areas west of the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway and Vindhya Telelink will work in areas to the east of the expressway.

“The two companies will have to complete the project in two years, i.e, by the end of 2019. The companies surveyed the areas for the past six months as the work was awarded to them. We are hoping uninterrupted good quality power supply in the future and that is the aim of the Haryana government. Smart Grid will not only end the mess of overhead wires but it will also put a permanent end to power thefts,” Chopra said.

Chopra added that the power distribution is not sufficient in Gurgaon because there is no Smart Grid system at present. He stressed that the power supply in Gurgaon should be like Delhi and Chandigarh.

Sunil Yadav, the president of Palam Vihar residents’ welfare association (RWA), said, “We are thankful to the DHBVN that the project has started from our locality. We will cooperate with the department to carry out the construction in a smooth way. We want good and quality power supply and that is possible only if Smart Grid is complete for the distribution.”

Chopra said, “The move is not only aimed at facilitating round-the-clock power supply to the city by 2022, but also to beautify the city, as a large number of overhead electric cables and over 7,000 electricity poles will be removed from the streets as a part of this ambitious project.”

“The digging work for the entire city has to be done by four private companies, of which two have been appointed. The process is underway to select two other companies. Each agency will undertake work on 25% of the city but the deadline of duct construction for all four companies is 2019-end, under Phase one of the project,” Rajesh Kansal, SDO, DHBVN, said.

The total cost of the project has been revised to Rs 3,500 crore and it will be completed by 2022.
