After prepaid options for phones, Metro and DTH, Noida now has prepaid power connections. UPPCL (Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited) launched prepaid power meters in Noida on Monday (January 11, 2016). These new connections come as an optional addition to the existing power connections. These smart meters are recharged by cards available at the nearest distribution division.

Consumers only require a valid ID proof to avail a new connection. These smart meters charge 1.25% less than the existing tariff rates. Initial installation of a single phase meter costs around Rs 6,800 which includes installation charges.

The connections are available in four variants: domestic, commercial, institutional and temporary. Recharge coupons range from a minimum of Rs 100 to a maximum of Rs 5,000. Requirements exceeding the maximum limit can be fulfilled by additional recharges.

Cost per unit climbs with the 5 slabs of 0-150, 151-300, 301-500 and 500+. Its Rs 4.40 for first, Rs 4.95 for second, Rs 5.60 for third and Rs 6.20 for the fifth slab.

According to Mukul Singhal, superintending engineer at Noida Electricity department, "People have to be aware about this new technological advantage." On being queried, he added that easier connections will surely reduce power theft, illegal connections and invite more temporary connections.

The smart meter prompts a user whenever the balance drops below Rs 100. It can also be customized as per consumer needs. In case the meter runs out, the consumer will continue to have power till it disconnects automatically at 11am on the next day. The meter will also provide uninterrupted supply on Sundays and National Holidays.

Sources confirmed 2 registrations on the very first day, and UPPCL hopes successful implementation in the coming months.
