Noida landfill issue: Urban, rural residents divide over ways of protest

It was probably for the first time that resident from both urban and rural areas came together to protest against something as they joined hands to protest against the construction of landfill at Sector-123 in Noida. But, the unity was short lived as they are now taking different stands.

While the urban residents vowed to carry out protests in a peaceful manner, the rural residents stuck to their aggressive ways by saying that they will continue to get arrested every day till other protesters are released from jail.

The rural residents said that they will continue to protest against the landfill by offering arrests every day. It was decided by the residents at the “Barat Ghar” of Parthala village. Then, they carried out a protest march to the construction site.

On Tuesday, few people also offered arrests to the police. Like earlier, the arrested people were taken to the police line at Surajpur of Greater Noida.

A villager, Subey Yadav, said, “We will continue to offer arrests till the police release Sukhbir Pehalwan and 25 others who were sent to jail last night. We have not done anything wrong. The decision to construct landfill should be rolled back by the Authority otherwise we will continue to protest against it.”

On the other hand, the residents from urban areas said, “We don’t want any violence during the protest. We will not get any solution by offering arrests. This way, we may get defeated by the Noida Authority.”

Anupam Oberoi, a resident of Sector-122 told City Spidey, “We do not want to fight with Noida Authority and district administration in this manner.

“We understand the heat of the moment but the need of the hour is to approach the situation in a calm manner like Mahendra Singh Dhoni does on the field and win matches for India. We also need to adopt such approach to win the fight against the Noida Authority,” added Oberoi.

Amit Kumar Singh, station officer of Phase-3 police station said, “Today, we arrested 35 people for disrupting the public peace under section 151 of the Indian Penal Code.”

“We have deployed extra security personnel at the construction site. But, despite that, the residents marched towards the site and sat on the site where the construction work was going on,” Singh said.
