MCG has set itself yet another goal — by July-end, it plans to install as many as 57,000 LED streetlights across the city. The move, besides lighting up dark stretches, is expected to save 13 million units of electricity.
LED lights will replace 49,000 existing sodium vapour bulbs and the rest 8,000 will be installed on new poles. The project, a collaboration between MCG and government-owned Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), is expected to cost Rs 92 crore.
The project started on March 30 and is maintaining its time schedule.
“The MCG is on target to complete the work by July-end. So far, more than 10,000 streetlights have been installed across the city,” Lalit Jindal, executive engineer of the MCG, said.
The work started in Ward 1. Currently, wards 2, 3, 5, 33 and 34 are getting their new lights.
The streetlights are being installed under the Street Lighting National Programme (SLNP) of the central government. And Gurgaon is the first city in Haryana to adopt it.
The MoU for the project was signed in October 2017 between the MCG and EESL for a period of 10 years. As per the agreement, the MCG is to bear the cost of upgrading the infrastructure and the EESL is to meet the maintenance costs.
The project was to be initially completed by January, but due to revision in the estimated cost and equipment, it got delayed and the deadline pushed to July, pushing the budget from Rs 50 crore to Rs 92 crore.
Officials also found that the infrastructure, such as the electric cables, circuits and poles, at many sites, had flaws or were not equipped to facilitate the installation of an LED bulb. The project was thus revised and the new proposal included replacing the infrastructure of the streetlights as well.TAGS: Streetlights / LEDs / MCG / Gurgaon / Dark Stretches / Project / EESL / MoU
