Noida: SP leaders say they will support protest against construction of landfill

The former MP of Gautam Budh Nagar and Samajwadi Party (SP) leader, Surendra Nagar, on Wednesday said in a press conference that they will not allow Noida Authority to construct a landfill at Sector-123 in Noida.

Nagar alleged that the Noida Authority misled the National Green Tribunal (NGT) gave wrong information about the Sector-123 plot where they are constructing landfill and waste to energy plant.

“Noida and Greater Noida Authority had written a joint letter to State Level Environment Impact Assessment Authority (SLEIAA) of Uttar Pradesh for the environment clearance regarding the inclusion of solid waste of Noida in municipal solid waste processing and disposal facility at Astoli in Greater Noida on May 13, 2016,” Nagar said.

“The plans to set up Composting Plant, RD Plant, Landfilling and a Leachate Treatment Plant at Astoli were also sent with the letter which got cleared after few months. But, still, Noida Authority has not started the construction for it,” Nagar added.

“A meeting was held in Noida Authority office on this topic under the chairmanship of Chief Executive Officer of NOIDA and GNIDA on 24 December 2014. It was decided that the waste will be segregated at Sector-151A and treated at Astoli in Greater Noida. Greater Noida Authority had agreed on it. Now the question is that why Noida Authority is changing its decision now and why they have instead chosen the Sector-123 plot where the surrounding population is more than 5 lakh,” Nagar said.

The Samajwadi Party has already decided to go against the construction of landfill at Sector-123. The SP President, Akhilesh Yadav, had also written in a tweet that the party will support the protest against the landfill. He also said that the BJP government only talks about Swachh Bharat but they do not think about Swasth Bharat.

“We are following the procedure and we will file our complaint in State Level Environment Impact Assessment Authority (SLEIAA) of Uttar Pradesh soon. After that, we will move to NGT court to roll back the authority’s decision of making landfill in Sector-123,” Nagar said.

The Noida Authority has decided to set up a landfill site in Sector-123 and they have also started the construction work. This step has been taken by the authority after the National Green Tribunal (NGT) issued an interim order on May 29 directing it to immediately stop dumping waste at a forest located in Sector 54.

After that, residents of high rise and nearby villagers are protesting continuously. 26 people were also sent to jail. The residents and villagers have called “Noida Bandh” on Friday to protest against the landfill.
