MCG gives consent for big recreation hub alongside Badshahpur drain

The Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) on Wednesday gave a go-ahead to the development of a non-private, multi-purpose recreation hub at 5km-long and 70metre-wide stretch along the Badshahpur drain.

It was decided in the meeting held last week that the new multi-purpose recreation hub will be located between sectors 48, 72 and 34.

The MCG officials informed that funds for the multi-purpose recreation hub will be raised through corporate social responsibility (CSR). They also said that the amount of funds received will help them in deciding whether entry to the recreation hub will be free or not.

“A meeting to discuss the development of the area around the Badshahpur drain was held on June 21. The drain will not be concretised in any manner, and the hub will only be developed around it. It was decided that through CSR venture, the area would be developed as an entertainment and leisure hub. Companies have been invited to submit their bids,” MCG commissioner Yashpal Yadav said.

However, Yadav did not give a clear-cut idea about when the work for recreation hub will start. He said that they anticipate the work to start in coming October.

As per the officials, the recreation hub will be having cycling, walking and jogging tracks, basketball and lawn tennis courts, open-air gymnasiums, sitting area, food courts, green belts, open-air theatres, small ponds and parks.

“Gurugram has few spaces dedicated for recreation. The bio-diversity park is one such place, but since it is located closer to the New Delhi border, it is not very easily assessable for all residents. Hence, we conceptualised creating a new hub in a centrally located part of the city,” Yadav said.

The MCG officials also informed that there will be a miniature sewage treatment plant (STP) at every one km. They said that this will help in keeping the area stench free.

There are also plans to make a parking space just like the one at Sukhna Lake in Chandigarh. The cost of the project is expected to be more than Rs 100 crore.

The officials conducted the meeting to draw the map of the recreation hub. The bids for the project will be requested from private companies on the basis of that map. The width of the hub is expected to be around 700 metres.
