The polls were conducted yesterday, and SS Lohan has been elected as the RWA president.
Finally, Uppal Southend in Sector 48, Gurgaon, held RWA elections yesterday after a hiatus of two years, spelling respite for residents who had been demanding a new body. The polls allowed the appointment of a president, a general secretary and a convener.
Fourteen other vacancies were also filled with candidates who contested unopposed.
Resident SS Lohan contested against Mahesh Yadav for the post of president, and won by two votes. Ramesh Bharadwaj, who contested Urmi Nangla for the position of general secretary, won by a difference of 8 votes. Archana Pathak will be the convener of the new RWA, beating her opponent, Yogesh Sharma, by 7 votes.
Of 800 eligible residents, 314 were listed on the electoral rolls. A total of 216 came to cast votes for all three positions.
The newly appointed president SS Lohan, said, “I contested for the post due to my passion for social work. As RWA president, I can do a lot for my community through official channels.”
A resident, requesting anonymity, said a few proxy votes were detected, but were immediately nullified, bringing the total count of valid votes to 210.
Residents have welcomed the new post- holders, and are happy that elections were conducted in a fair manner.
Last elections were held on March 27, 2016.
According to residents, the last polls were conducted in an unjust, unfair and arbitrary manner, and even attempts were made to forcefully gain control of the RWA.
In fact, according to one resident who requested anonymity, attempts were made to manipulate society records to reduce the number of residents eligible for voting.
The matter is pending in Punjab and Haryana High Court.
