Air quality slips to ‘poor’ category way ahead of winter in Delhi

Much ahead of the onset of winter, the air quality has gone down to poor category in national capital. It has been caused by the change in the direction of the wind.

The air quality of Delhi was recorded as moderate till Sunday evening. On Monday, it slipped back to poor category.

According to System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFAR), the sudden changes have come due to the burning of stubble in neighbouring states like Punjab and Haryana.

The air quality was improved in last two days. It was recorded at moderate level with an index of 181. But, the Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded at 235 on Monday.

As per the Supreme Court mandated Environment Pollution (Prevention & Control) Authority (EPCA), the graded action plan to curb Delhi air pollution underlines five stages on the basis of AQI. Like, AQI between 0-50 is considered good, 51-100 satisfactory, 101-200 moderate, 201-300 poor, 301-400 very poor, and 401-500 severe.

The PM10 level (presence of particles with diameter less than 10mm) was at 230 in Delhi and the PM2.5 level (presence of particles with diameter less than 2.5 mm) in the city was 101, according to a data by SAFAR.

As per SAFAR’s forecast, there will be further deterioration of air quality in the next two days with the PM10 expected to touch 264 and PM2.5 to reach 111 in the next three days.
