I’puram: Driver booked for attempting to rape maid at ATS Advantage

A 25-year-old driver allegedly attempted to rape a 22-year-old maid at ATS Advantage, Indirapuram on Monday evening. As per reports, the incident happened on the 23rd floor of Tower 5.

Both the driver and the maid are employed at apartments in the same tower. The driver, Avadhesh Singh, is employed in an apartment on the 9th floor whereas the maid is employed at an apartment on the 19th floor.

As per the police, both of them went inside the lift together at the ground floor. The driver did not get down on the 9th floor and accompanied the maid to the 19th floor. He forcibly did not allow her to exit on the 19th floor.

As the lift reached the 23rd floor, the driver dragged the maid out of the lift and attempted rape on her. In resistance, the maid started screaming. Hearing the scream, the security guards rushed to the spot and got hold of the driver.

The lady, who had employed the maid, called the police. Then, the accused was handed over to the police.

SP (City) Shlok Kumar said that the accused was booked under section 376 and 511 of IPC in case of attempt to rape. Kumar also said that the medical tests of the maid happened on Tuesday and the report is awaited.

Secretary of the society’s AOA, Shekhar Vikas said that the CCTV footage showed that the victim and the accused were talking and he blocked her way on the 19th floor. What happened beyond that couldn’t be captured due to unavailability of cameras on the floor. The police are yet to procure the footage.

The residents are worried over the unavailability of cameras in the corridors. They also said that such incidents keep happening due to inadequate surveillance of the common areas.

Lipika Bhushan, a resident of the society, said that the builder promised three-tier security, but in reality, the open areas are devoid of electronic surveillance.

She also said that society is lacking in a security system where immediate response is provided. “Cameras are often used to gather proof after the crime,” she said.

Vikas said that a proposal was sent to the builder to install cameras and equipments to monitor the live feed but it did not get passed. The society has over 2,000 flats and over 10,000 residents live there.
