Indirapuram drain tragedy: Deceased girl’s family demands Rs 5 lakh compensation

Following the death of 11-year-old girl Priyanka after falling into an open drain outside Pinnacle Tower on October 19, the family of the deceased girl on Tuesday met official from the district administration, demanding compensation for the loss of their child due to the sheer negligence of Ghaziabad Development Authority (GDA).

The family, accompanied by Alok Kumar, social activist and President of Federation of Apartments Owners Association (FedAOA), met Sub Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Vivek Mishra to press the demand of compensation. Though SDM Vivek Mishra accepted their request, deceased Priyanka’s family is expecting a minimum of Rs 5 lakh as the compensation amount.

Justifying the family’s demand, Alok Kumar said it should not be considered as a token of sympathy but as their right.

“The sheer irresponsible act of GDA is the reason behind child’s death. It happened because of the inefficiency of administration, hence it should compensate the bereaved family,” Kumar said.

On asking how much the compensation will be, SDM Vivek Mishra said it will be decided after checking the financial background of the family.

He also added that a report will be prepared and sent to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s office for the approval.

“Once approved, compensation will be disbursed from Chief Minister’s Relief Fund,” Mishra added.

Besides, Mishra also told City Spidey that calls have been made to the officials of GDA looking after Indirapuram to record family members’ statement regarding a probe led by him under the directions of District Magistrate (DM) Ritu Maheshwari.

City Spidey earlier reported that following child's death, DM Ghaziabad had asked SDM to probe the matter and file the report within a week’s time.

The father, Santosh, works at a factory in Noida while mother Radha Rani works as domestic help in two societies at Indirapuram. The family lives in Kanawani basti and had moved in the city four months ago from their village in Hardoi district of Uttar Pradesh. The couple has three more kids and the girl died was their second youngest child.
