Indirapuram drain tragedy: Family files FIR against GDA for girl’s death

The family of an 11-year-old girl, who died after falling into an open drain at Indirapuram, has filed an FIR against the Ghaziabad Development Authority (GDA) on Friday.

The family has been holding the GDA responsible for the poor upkeep of the drains and attributing it as a reason for the death of the girl.

GDA has been charged under section 304(a) of IPC of causing death by negligence.

SP City, Shlok Kumar informed that the FIR registered at Indirapuram police station does not mention any names. “No officials of the GDA were named in the FIR,” he added.

While talking to City Spidey, Mukesh Kumar, maternal uncle of the deceased, said that the family did not name any official in the FIR because the whole authority is responsible for his niece’s death.

The deceased’s family lives in Kanawani Basti and had moved in the city four months ago from their village in Hardoi district of Uttar Pradesh. Father Santosh is a peon in a company at Noida while mother Radha Rani works as a domestic help at Rail Vihar society in Indirapuram.

On the night of Dussehra, the girl was heading home with her father from the mela ground when she slipped through the uncovered gap of the drain near Pinnacle Tower in Ahinsa Khand II, Indirapuram. Her father jumped in the drain but could not find her there. Her body was found by the NDRF team after 13 hours of rescue operations.

GDA reportedly provided drain’s blueprint quite late which prolonged the rescue operation. Sources said that GDA officials reached the spot 11 hours after the incident happened. The incident happened at 10:30 pm while GDA official reached there around 10 am on the next day.

Reacting upon the development, GDA VC agreed that negligence happened at the authority’s end.

“Besides, we and DM are also probing the case,” she said.

Both GDA and district administration have constituted a team to probe the role of GDA in the case of girl’s death.
