Monkey menace causes panic among residents at Vasant Kunj

The monkey menace is troubling people at posh colony of Vasant Kunj in South Delhi. The situation has become so grave that the parents of school going children and senior citizens are calling the security guards of the societies before stepping out of their apartments.

People are so scared that they are even keeping their windows closed. They are being constantly troubled by monkeys in last one month.

The situation is same at many multi-storey housing societies such as Kaveri Apartments, Yamuna Apartments, Ganga Apartments, Sarswati Apartments and Narmada Apartments.

The parents of small kids are especially worried about the ongoing situation as the kids come out in open to play.

Parveen Sharma, president of Kaveri Apartment, talking to City Spidey informed that from last one month, there was hardly any day when there was no monkey attack on residents.

“Two days back, a group of three monkeys entered into a flat of an elderly woman who was alone at that time. She got scared seeing a group of monkeys and started shouting. Hearing old-lady’s scream, one neighbour immediately informed the security guards and then security guards chased the monkeys out. Nearly a half dozen of people including children and women were attacked in my society alone,” Sharma said.

To keep monkeys away from the societies’ premises, the societies’ managing committees have deployed two-three extra security guards especially for chasing away monkeys.

The situation has not improved even after the written complaint by the residents of these societies to South Delhi Municipal Corporation on September 26. They requested the SDMC to take immediate action.

“From past few days, we are facing problems due of monkeys. They have attacked at least five people. In our society, many senior citizen and small kids live and their lives are in danger,” a written complaint by Kaveri Apartments read.

Residents alleged that the SDMC has not taken any action so far. Instead, it asked residents not to hire private monkey chasers because doing this would amount a violation of animal rights.
