Not a drop to drink, but water bills to bear!

Despite not getting any water supply from Delhi Jal Board since November last year, societies in Mayur Vihar Phase 1 Extension have been presented with bills running into lakhs.

Not a drop to drink, but water bills to bear!

Here’s an irony. Although residents of most housing societies in Mayur Vihar Phase 1 Extension have not been getting water from the supply lines of Delhi Jal Board, they are receiving huge bills from it.

This state of affairs has prompted a few housing societies to end their subscription with DJB. They are now dependent on groundwater and bottled water for drinking.

United India Co-Operative Group Housing Society has not received water from DJB since November 2015, but received a cumulative bill of Rs 1,94, 607 in April. Ummed Singh, former president of the society, said, “The scarcity of water here is a decade-old problem, but now it's just become worse. We have been extracting groundwater for drinking, but since there are huge health risks involved, we have switched to bottled water. But the bigger issue is that we are getting bills running into lakhs of rupees. This is when the Delhi government promised a supply of 20,000 litres free of cost. Do we not come under its ambit?”

Shankar Bhan, chairman of Federation of Cooperative Group Housing Societies Mayur Vihar, told City Spidey, “Delhi Jal Board gets most of its revenue from societies, but poor water supply still remains a huge problem here.”

“We have even met deputy CM Manish Sisodia, who is also our MLA, and raised the issue with him," he added. Initially, he assured us of help, but later asked us to coordinate with his personal assistant, who does not even answer our calls. What are we supposed to do in such a situation?"
