Say hello to Vasundhara Enclave's new councillor

Residents of Vasundhara Enclave on Tuesday elected Anand Kumar as their new councillor. Kumar, a Congress candidate, defeated his rival, Vinod Kumar Binny, of the BJP, by 1,109 votes. This was the result of the by-polls of Ward No 214 of Delhi.

Residents hope he will address their civic issues, as Kumar is the first councillor to be elected in the past two years.

Praveen Massey, resident of Paryatan Vihar Housing Society, said, “We had highlighted a few civic problems in the area, such as poor maintenance of parks, clogged drains and cleanliness of roads prior to the election. Kumar had assured us that the problems would be resolved in the next six months. I hope he sticks to his word and doesn't let our faith in him down,” she said.

“Anand Kumar had unsuccessfully contested twice as an independent candidate," said Rajender Chouhan, president, Vishal Apartments. "However, he was always in touch with us and listened to all our problems. He is good at coordinating with politicians from different parties. It is only because of him that we got our ration cards and voter cards made.”

“Poor drainage inside and outside the society is a huge problem," said Raju Malhotra, resident of Samrat Housing Society. "I have discussed the issue with him, and he has assured us that it will be resolved in eight months, though it is too early to say whether he will succeed.”

Speaking to City Spidey, an overwhelmed Kumar said that his priority was to improve the condition of the parks. This included proper watering of lawns and plants, recruiting gardeners, keeping the parks clean and ensuring they are all well lit. Next in line on his agenda was a meeting with the traffic commissioner of Delhi to come up with a solution to the heavy traffic snarls in Vasundhara Enclave.
